Building Community in Engineering
Through her work and leadership in the Society of Women Engineers, 星空传媒 alumna Yamuna Sree Sabbati is creating space for others to grow, lead, and succeed

When Yamuna Sree Sabbati MS 鈥18 attended the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) national conference in Los Angeles in 2023, she didn鈥檛 expect it to change the course of her professional life. 鈥淲hat started as a single opportunity became a defining turning point,鈥 she said.
At the conference, Sabbati found something that resonated deeply: a community of women not only navigating a traditionally male-dominated field, but actively leading and redefining it. Inspired, she became involved with , where she now serves as secretary and chair of the communications committee鈥攚ith her sights set on becoming chapter president.
鈥淢entorship isn’t a one-way act of giving. It鈥檚 a shared journey of growth,鈥 Sabbati said. 鈥淲hile the mentee gains guidance and perspective, the mentor deepens their own understanding, empathy, and sense of purpose.鈥
That belief in mentorship and connection has shaped Sabbati鈥檚 path for years鈥攕tarting with her decision to attend 星空传媒 for graduate school. 鈥淔rom the schools that accepted me, 星空传媒 stood out immediately,鈥 she said. 鈥淚ts engineering excellence was clear, but what sealed it was much bigger鈥攖he deep partnership between 星空传媒 and , built on talent, hands-on learning, real-world impact, and mentorship. I didn鈥檛 just want a degree, I wanted direction.鈥
Since joining Caterpillar in 2019, Sabbati has found that sense of purpose in her work as an autonomy engineer, where she develops technology to keep workers safe. Her work focuses on systems that use artificial intelligence to detect driver fatigue and distraction, alerting operators in real time to reduce the risk of accidents. 鈥淭his work makes me excited to show up every single day,鈥 she said.
She brings that same passion beyond the workplace through her involvement in SWE-Central Illinois, where she works closely with 星空传媒 engineering students. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a living, breathing community where professionals and students meet, learn, and grow together,鈥 she said.
That connection came to life in April, when SWE hosted its first-ever 星空传媒 Industry Night鈥攂ringing students and professionals together for honest conversations about career paths, challenges, and opportunities.
鈥淲hen a student sees a professional who looks like her鈥攚ho came from where she came from鈥攕omething powerful shifts,鈥 Sabbati said. 鈥淭hey move from asking, 鈥楧o I belong here?鈥 to 鈥楬ow far can I go?鈥欌
For Sabbati, that moment is deeply personal. 鈥淚 was that student once,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ow I get to be the reason someone else believes that they can be here too.鈥
She encourages young engineers to embrace every opportunity, even the ones that seem small at first. 鈥淵ou walk into a panel or a career event, and you walk out with a new sense of who you are and what鈥檚 possible,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the power of these communities.鈥
That mindset, she says, was shaped long before her career began. 鈥淔rom the time I was a little girl, my mother taught me one truth: a woman must be independent鈥攆inancially, mentally, and emotionally,鈥 Sabbati said. 鈥淣o matter what life throws at you, if you have those three, you will always rise.鈥
Today, Sabbati is helping ensure other women have that same foundation鈥攖hrough her work, her mentorship, and her leadership in SWE.
What began as a single conference invitation has grown into something much bigger: a commitment to opening doors, building confidence, and showing the next generation of engineers just how far they can go.
